Treasurer Needed
The Chapter is seeking a volunteer to assume the role of Treasurer. This vital position is part of the leadership team of a dynamic, inclusive, and science-based non-profit organization. While a background in science is not needed, a commitment to the California Native Plant Society's (CNPS) mission and the necessary skills for this role—such as numerical proficiency, meticulous attention to detail, and dependability—are crucial. Although some financial experience is beneficial, it is not a requirement.
The responsibilities of the Treasurer include the creation and upkeep of accurate and current financial records for the Chapter. This involves:
- preparing the Chapter’s annual budget and quarterly financial statements (which are reviewed during Chapter Board meetings),
- handling all filings required by the State CNPS office (including quarterly sales tax reports, annual inventory, and income and expense reports),
- making deposits and settling bills,
- reconciling bank and other financial statements,
- addressing financial inquiries.
The role requires approximately 120 hours over the course of the year, with peak activity occurring in January, March, April, July, and October. These months align with deadlines for sales tax reports (January, April, July, October), the drafting of the Chapter budget (March), and the preparation of the annual financial report for the State office (April). The Chapter's finance committee is available to help the treasurer.
The Treasurer is a member of the Chapter’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee and is expected to attend Board meetings. With the exception of March, when an in-person meeting is held to finalize the annual budget, the monthly meetings are conducted via Zoom.

Volunteer Opportunity: Growing Natives Garden Tour Co-chair
We are looking for a volunteer to co-chair our Growing Natives Garden Tour committee (https://gngt.org/). This annual spring tour of native plant gardens in the Santa Clara Valley & Peninsula has provided inspiration for thousands of people since its inception in 2003. The position is an excellent opportunity to use your project planning skills to put on one of the premier native plant tours in the state. You will be partnering with an experienced committee member as co-chair, so no prior experience with the tour is needed. The committee meets monthly throughout the year to prepare for the tour. Applicants should be willing to commit approximately 4 to 8 hours monthly to participate in meetings and other organizational activities. Additional hours are generally needed in the months immediately before and during the tour, which will be held on April 13/14, 2024. Interested and want to learn more?
