SUMMARY:South Slope Walk on San Bruno Mountain (South San Francisco)
LOCATION:San Bruno Mountain (South San Francisco)
DESCRIPTION:Join Chuck Heimstadt and Loretta Brooks to explore the less-visited south s
lopes of San Bruno Mountain. This area features bright landscapes of large
areas of grasslands critical to our resident endangered butterflies and som
e plants on the CNPS watchlist, such as coast iris, coast rock cress and Sa
n Francisco wallflower. We may also see onion, fritillaries and butterfly h
ost plants: silver bush lupine and California golden violet. In addition, w
e’ll see Niebla lichen, which occurs only in the fog belt of the California
n coast, from Mendocino to Baja.\nSince there are only fire roads and weedi
ng trails on this side of San Bruno Mountain, the going can be difficult on
steep and rocky slopes. Please be sure to wear sturdy footwear, as this ar
ea is really only for the adventuresome. We should have time to stop at the
top, so bring a snack or lunch. There are no restrooms per se on the mount
ain, except in the parking area.\nRSVP via email is required to join the hi
ke. No drop-ins please and space is limited. To RSVP, please email Chuck an
d Loretta at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need
JavaScript enabled to view it.. Details will be sent to you about the meeti
ng location as the date gets close, including the possibility of cancellati
on due to rain. Waivers will be provided to be signed on site.\n
