SUMMARY:The Diversity of Mariposa Lilies Explained Through a Genetics Lens a talk by Dr. Adriana Hernandez
LOCATION:Los Altos Library Orchard Room\, 13 S. San Antonio Rd.\, Los Altos
DESCRIPTION:<div class="page" title="Page 4"><div class="layoutArea"><div class="column
"><p>Under natural selection, plant traits often become homogeneous, but ho
w exactly that happens is not well understood. What mechanisms shape and ma
intain gene flow? How does trait variation occur and how is it&nbsp;</p><di

class="column"><p>Jasper Ridge scientist Dr. Adriana Hernandez has develope
d Mariposa lilies (<em>Calochortus</em> sp.) as a model system to investiga
te the evolution of strikingly diverse floral traits. She uses the highly v
ariable California native species <em>Calochortus venustus</em> to identify
and interpret the evolutionary significance of geographical patterns of fl
oral trait variation, genetic diversity, range evolution and the genetic me
chanisms underlying climatic adaptation. Her work utilizes comparative meth
ods from population genetics and genomics to identify candidate genes that
may be responsible for the morphological diversity observed in this plant.<
/p><p>Come to this talk to deepen your knowledge of this beautiful plant fr
 om a scientific perspective.</p><p><strong>Dr. Adriana Hernandez</strong>&n
bsp;is a population biologist who studies the evolution and ecology of Cali
fornia native plants. Her work leverages natural history collections and co
mparative genomic techniques to help understand the patterns,&nbsp;processe
s, and mechanisms that drive and maintain biodiversity across the Californi
a landscape. Through community science and outreach projects, she also aims
to make the botanical sciences more accessible to diverse communities.</p>
